Bering 65 “Serge”

Sergey Myaz is an active, passionate big-game sport fisherman and mariner with a distinguished career that includes service as a first officer in the Russian navy for two decades.

He sought out a yacht that is rugged and dependable, so he bought his first Bering 65 “Serge” in 2015 which can be comfortably operated and maintained by two people. One of the custom options he chose was to convert the vessel’s lazarette into a voluminous refrigerator to store his catch. Among this angler’s favorite sportfish are yellow fin and other species of tuna.

His maiden voyage took him from the yard in Zhangjiang, China, to Phuket, Thailand, via Singapore, followed by a 1,200-mile fishing trip to the Andaman Islands. Located in splendid isolation in the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Islands are an archipelago of more than 300 islands, islets and rocks stretching over an area of more than 225 miles from north to south. The islands feature unmatched fishing opportunities as well as stunning landscapes, including Barren Island and its active volcano.

Serge’s most notable voyage so far is a nonstop 22 days, 3,600-nautical-mile cruise from Phuket, Thailand, to Busan (Pusan), Korea. Towing a 9,000-lb., 40-Fountain Sportfisher and with three people on board, Serge cruised with one engine at a time at a speed of 6.5-7.5 knots, burning 10,000 liters of fuel and managing to get back to the shore with one third of the fuel remaining in the tank. Sergey operated the vessel on autopilot most of the time and it functioned without issue.

His future cruising plans include Vladivostok, Russia and then Gold Coast, Australia.
